“Ya ya ya”

Ayla’s learned to cover her ears and shout!

It’s hilarious. Ayla will suddenly slam both hands against each side of her head, cover her ears and yell “ya ya ya” before cracking up into a giggle.

I have no idea where she learned it, maybe from wearing ear muffs while we using power tools on our renovations, but this morning Ayla did it out of the blue.

Ayla’s had a bit of an ear thing going for a while now.

A few months ago I noticed her pinching the tops of her ears with her fingers so I went in to give them a rub for her.

Just like The Dog does, Ayla’s head melted into my hand, her eyes rolled back in her head and she let out a soft groan.

Ever since then I’ve notice Ayla pinch at her ears when she’s tired, upset or a bit out of sorts, and if she’s in need of a little settling I’ll rub her ears for her.

But the comfort Ayla gets from that was nothing like the laughs she got from hearing her voice change when she covered her ears the morning, then again tonight at tea.

Monkey do

Ayla learned to drink out of the hose today, like all proper Aussie kids should!

Playing with the hose is one if Ayla’s favourite things to do and she takes great pleasure in spraying us or The Dog when we least expect it.

Today though, Ayla watched as The Dog took a long drink from the hose, then of course it was a case of monkey see monkey do.

I was surprised at how steadily Ayla held the hose, and how well balanced she was as she bent down for a drink.

From my memory I recall ending up wetter than a mermaid whenever I tried to drink from the hose, even as a bigger kid, but Ayla managed to keep the water on her lips and out of her nose (mostly).

Jumping Castle

Saturday, 19 July 2014: One Year, One Hundred and Ten Days Old

Ayla went in her first jumping castle tonight!

It was at her little friend Caleb’s first birthday where a jumping castle had been set up to keep the bigger kids entertained.

After the kids wore themselves out, it was time for us adults to get in and jump about and as Ayla was still up and at ‘em thanks to a big late-afternoon nap, she joined us.

I didn’t know what she’d think at first, or even if she’d be able to stand or crawl or do anything at all inside the inflatable castle, but Ayla’s balance and confidence was unmatched as she squealed and bounced about by my side.

After we’d had enough and become so puffed out we could hardly breathe (I don’t know how on earth kids stay in those things for hours on end) we re-joined the party on the patio.

But the fun bug had already bitten, and Ayla spent the next fifteen minutes trying to squirm out of her Daddy’s arms, saying “more!” and pointing to the jumping castle.

Unbelievable

Ayla has learned how to take her own nappy off…. It’s chaos.

Hubby and I were rushing to get out the door for a surprise dinner he’d arranged for our wedding anniversary, and Ayla was not interested in cooperating.

After getting out of the shower Ayla decided she’d have some no-nappy time, even though I’d decided she needed clothes on for when the baby sitter arrived.

Ayla’s never been interested in change times, taking great pleasure in kicking and yelling at me, and tonight was no exception.

The only difference was that after the battle when Ayla was back on her feet toddling around, she trumped me by swiftly undoing and taking off her nappy, stuffing it in a bucket, covering it with a toy as hiding it in the corner… Unbelievable!

Without time to argue I grabbed another nappy and put it on Ayla while she was standing, then promptly (and successfully) distracted her with food.

NOTE: this photo is of Ayla SLEEPING on the change table. She didn’t fall asleep there, but she stayed asleep while I changed her!!

Amazeballs

Ayla was paying more attention at The Wiggles yesterday than I realised!

On the way to day care this morning I decided to sing “hot potato”… and Ayla knew the actions!!

For only ever having heard the song once before, amidst a stack of other songs, I was shocked and stunningly impressed Ayla remembered!

When I sang the words “hot potato, hot potato” Ayla made little fists and banged them together, albeit in a clapping motion rather than a stacking one.

When I sang “cold spaghetti, cold spaghetti” Ayla waved her hands sideways in the air with little spirit fingers, so very close to the up and down waving action from the song.

And then when I sang “mashed banana, mashed banana” Ayla nailed it, opening her fingers wide, smashing her palms together and twisting them left and right with a cheeky grin on her face.

THEN! Just when I thought Ayla couldn’t get any more amazing, I caught her playing “round and round the garden” with herself!

Ayla was tickling her left palm with the fingers on her right, before touching her forearm, then her upper arm, then sticking her fingers under her arm in an attempt to tickle herself!

I squealed with delight and amazement! Then Ayla did it again… This time with her version of words!!

Gosh Ayla is amazing. So overwhelming, undeniably amazeballs.

Winter woolies

Monday, 16 June 2014: One Year and Eleven Weeks Old.

Ayla went off to day care wearing her winter woolies today.

It was the coldest morning we’re likely to get all year – 17.4 degrees at 7.30am – and there was no better reason to rug up.

What made the chilly occasion even more special was the fact that only yesterday Hubby and I splurged on a few warm clothes, jumpers, a cardigan, a vest and some jeans for Baby Ayla.

The clothes were intended for our family trip to Melbourne next week, but Ayla got to don her little pink jumper ten days early…. Much to Mumma’s delight!

I don’t think there’s many things cuter than a rugged up baby, and seeing Ayla toddling around in her jumper and skinny jeans this morning melted my heart.
