High heels

Tuesday, 22 July 2014: One Year, One Hundred and Thirteen Days Old.

Ayla got around in my high heels for the first time this morning.

We’ve known Ayla has a shoe addiction for a while now, and while I’ve seen her get around wearing various adults thongs today was the first day she donned a set of heels and strut her stuff.

Ayla was surprisingly stable in the 4inch heels, certainly better than me after a long weekend wearing thongs.

And of course Ayla was super proud of herself, smiling and clapping and cracking it when it was time to go and I had to take the high heels off and put her boring old day care sneakers on.

Winter woolies

Monday, 16 June 2014: One Year and Eleven Weeks Old.

Ayla went off to day care wearing her winter woolies today.

It was the coldest morning we’re likely to get all year – 17.4 degrees at 7.30am – and there was no better reason to rug up.

What made the chilly occasion even more special was the fact that only yesterday Hubby and I splurged on a few warm clothes, jumpers, a cardigan, a vest and some jeans for Baby Ayla.

The clothes were intended for our family trip to Melbourne next week, but Ayla got to don her little pink jumper ten days early…. Much to Mumma’s delight!

I don’t think there’s many things cuter than a rugged up baby, and seeing Ayla toddling around in her jumper and skinny jeans this morning melted my heart.

Piggy tails

Thursday, 29 May 2014: One Year and Sixty Days Old.

I picked Ayla up today to discover piggy tails in her hair!!

Oh my gosh, it was adorable, and I think it might become Ayla’s customary ‘do.

It made me realise that day care is definitely shaping the person Ayla is becoming.

It’s a good thing, I think. If it weren’t for day care I probably wouldn’t have thought to try a pony tail, let alone piggy tails!

I guess sending Ayla today care is particularly useful because I have no idea or experience with anything child related.

For example I probably wouldn’t have thought to try finger painting with Ayla but apparently she loves it!

As good as day care is though, there’s a part of me, deep down, that is sad I’m not discovering these things on my own.

I would love to have seen Ayla’s face the first time she put her hands in a tub of paint, and it would have been so exciting to realise her hair was finally long enough to style!

But I guess it’s all part and parcel of modern day life. So few people are in a position to stay at home with their kids, and I have to remind myself how lucky I was to have a whole year at home.

Passion for fashion

Sunday, 25 May 2014: One Year and Fifty Three Days Old.

Ayla’s developing a passion for fashion and I think the only thing stopping her from walking at home was a pair of sparkly shoes!!

This afternoon Ayla came crawling out of her room a hundred miles an hour dragging a t-shirt that she brought straight to me, handing it over expectedly.

I asked Ayla if she wanted me to help her put the shirt on to which she replied with a shriek and a smile.

I pulled the shirt over her head and buttoned it up at the shoulder; Ayla then stood back and grabbed at it , looking down as if to check that it looked alright!!

Then later this evening Ayla was playing quietly in her room, almost too quietly, so I stuck my head in to check on her.

I saw Ayla sitting on the floor surrounded by shoes, her shoe draw open, and she was trying to put a little pink sandal on her foot.

Ayla caught a glimpse of me and immediately held out the shoe so I could help her with it.

With one shoe on we went looking for the matching other, then when they were both on Ayla held my hands and charged out to the lounge room to show her Daddy.

After a brief parade she took me back into her room and selected a new pair of shoes, which again I helped her put on and she again showed them off to her Dad.

The third pair of shoes were sequinned, sparkly black slippers and Ayla seemed to like them the most.

She was almost running down the hall to show her Dad and when she finally got to him Ayla started stomping her feet, almost as if she was tap dancing with excitement.

Then I let her go.

Ayla walked the whole way down the hall by herself, and then back again.

Then she walked around the lounge to her toys.

It was as if all the encouragement Ayla needed to walk at home was a pair of pretty shoes, which of course is completely understandable… It’s amazing what a gorgeous pair of shoes can achieve 😉

Little helper

Friday, 24 May 2014: One Year and Fifty Three Days Old.

Ayla is such a little helper, it’s adorable.

This morning as we were getting ready for the day Ayla picked up a tissue and started wiping at some spilt water in the kitchen.

A little later Ayla had found a baby wipe and was pretending to blow her nose and wipe her face with it, complete with realistic sniffing sound effects.

While I putting on my make up in the bedroom Ayla was picking out shoes for me to wear, showing me each one she found as if to ask “these ones mum?”.

Then when the time came for me to put Ayla’s shoes on she wanted to do it all herself, but I settled for a compromise and let her try to do the left one while I did the right.

Cutest of all was this evening though when Ayla and I got home to discover a parcel of new little girls clothes sent to us from her Granddad.

Ayla, in true helper style, started trying to put them on… All of them… At once!

Ayla loved her new clothes so much that after realising she couldn’t wear them decided to kiss and hug instead, before trying to put them away in my handbag.

Ponytail

Sunday, 18 May 2014: One Year and Forty Nine Days Old.

Ayla’s hair is finally long enough for a tiny ponytail!

Although I’d noticed Ayla’s hair had been getting in her eyes a bit, I hadn’t realised it was long enough to tie in a ponytail until one day this week when I picked Ayla up from day care and discovered her new ‘do.

Now when I say ponytail I really mean a wispy white tuft sticking up on the top of Ayla’s head, bound tightly by one of the smallest elastic hair bands I’ve ever seen!

The day care mums warned me that Ayla would pull her pony, and as soon as I touched it (I couldn’t resist) Ayla, true to form, reached for the tuft and yanked out the band before I could blink.

Ayla’s quick action meant I also managed to lose the hair tie so I could hardly wait to buy some today during our weekly grocery shop.

Within minutes of getting home from Coles I had found and opened the packet of hair ties, and created my own sticky-up tuff of blonde hair on the top of Ayla’s head.

I could hardly contain my excitement at realising we’ve now entered a whole new realm of cuteness where the possibilities are endless; clips, ribbons, elastics, scrunchies even!

Dressing up

20140515-212221.jpg

Thursday, 15 May 2014: One Year and Forty Five Days Old.

Ayla’s getting to the age now where she loves dressing up.

It’s not uncommon for me to find her in our bedroom with a pair of my underpants on her head (charming) or in her own room pulling out the duty laundry and trying to re-wear her outfits.

Ayla’s also taken a recent interest in my shoes, particularly now that I’m back at work and my poor old thongs have been relegated to weekends.

This morning however I gave Ayla her first piece of costume jewellery to play with and without a moment thought Ayla began adorning her neck with a long strand of plastic pearls.

What was cutest of all was that Ayla seemed to know they were pretty because she almost blushed when she put them on.

Complete with a one-shoulder shrug, half a smile and a tilt of the head Ayla was the epitome of a little girl pretending to be a princess.

Hairy interesting

20140308-205719.jpg

Friday, 7 March 2014: Three Hundred and Forty Days Old.

Ayla had a hairy interesting day today. No typo there, I mean hairy.

It started this morning at music class when Ayla made friends with a little girl who was about two years old.

The new little “friend” was standing above Ayla gently patting her soft blonde fuzz, then suddenly decided to grab two handfuls and pull – hard.

The “friend” was pulling so hard that she involuntarily started biting her bottom lip, all while my poor baby Ayla was having her hair wrenched from its roots.

Needless to say it ended in tears and although the “friend” seemed remorseful when her Daddy brought her back to apologise Ayla’s heart was broken and she wanted no bar of it.

That was hair incident number one.

Hair incident number two happened at home during Ayla’s lunch.

I was briefly distracted by my own lunch while Ayla ate hers and when I glanced back to check she was ok I caught my darling daughter rubbing food into her hair.

Ayla’s usually silky soft locks were sticking out in strange directions and I could see clumps of food flapping about in the tangle.

Of course, lunch today included peanut butter, cheese and tuna and all three of those delightful ingredients were squished into Ayla’s hair.

That was hair incident number two.

Hair incident number three (also known as hair incident 2b) was a direct result of the lunch-in-hair situation…

After giving Ayla’s hair the best wash of its life after lunch, it was the fluffiest and wildest it’s ever been.

Ayla’s ‘do was so outrageous that when we were at Bunnings this afternoon a stranger waiting beside me at the paint counter suggested I tip Ayla upside down and use her as a paintbrush!

Ayla laughed… Poor bubba, if she only knew!

PS – if you haven’t already, please vote Ayla as the cutest baby in Australia and help her win a People’s Choice Award in the Bonds Australia Baby Photo Comp…. Thanks in advance!

Tempted

20140203-222255.jpg

Sunday, 2 February 2014: Three Hundred and Eight Days Old.

Ayla and I headed to Byron Bay with her Grandad today where we meandered our way along aisles and aisles of creatively crafty market stalls.

I have never been very interested in shopping, let alone actually buying things, but today I found myself tempted by so many gorgeous baby girl things that I hardly knew myself!

Crafty people seem to know the “mothers of daughters” target market too well and I assume it’s strategy that has them putting the cutest little dresses, the prettiest flower garlands and pinkest miniature sunhats on display at the front of their stalls.

I can only imagine how much harder it,s going to be to say “no” when Ayla can walk and talk and beg me into buying her things she certainly doesn’t need but both of us desperately want!

But I was proud of my resistance today and after returning to the car with just two tops and a dress I was pleased to know that those few items will surely be the source of many an “awwwww” when we go home.

“He”?!

20140117-170222.jpg

Thursday, 16 January 2014: Two Hundred and Ninety One Days Old.

Ayla has been getting mistaken for a boy!

I don’t know if it’s because she’s almost always shirtless with just a nappy on, or if maybe it’s because Ayla’s hair is has somehow grown itself into a darn near perfect short back and sides.

But regardless, I even had a workman call Ayla a “he” yesterday… and she was in the bath!

It’s funny how upset I’ve been getting about it. I mean, I know it’s sometimes hard to tell the difference between boys and girls when they’re just little babies but surely Baby Ayla is girly?!

Isn’t she?!

It’s driven me to put Ayla in pink shirts more often now, and to dress her as prettily as possible when we go out, simply because I can’t bear the thought of someone else stopping me in the street to say “ohhhh, isn’t HE cute”!

I am also hoping Ayla’s straight blonde locks have a growth spurt soon so that I can give up on the fight against headbands and try out some pretty clips or something.

I know it’s silly and I really shouldn’t care – Ayla certainly doesn’t – but to me Ayla is a perfect porcelain princess and I want the world to see it too!
