Clever Sausage

IMG_0426.JPG

Tuesday, 9 September 2014; One Year, One Hundred and Sixty One Days Old

Despite all her health issues, I am so undeiably and completely grateful Ayla is a happy, bright, clever little sausage.

Today, Ayla decided out of the blue that she could high-five herself. It came after she high-fived me, then high-fived my Mum, and of course becuase she didn’t want to miss out herself so Ayla held her left hand out flat in front of her then slapped down on it with her right.

Ayla also discovered that she can fit in the dolls pram I bought her the other day. This now means that Ayla’s refuses to allow anything else to sit in the pram except herself, and means I find myself hunched over, pushing her around the house for the half the day.

And, Ayla learned a new word; pretty. I put a headband on her this morning and told her to look in the mirror. She walked over to it, swayed and waved her hands and then said “pret-ty”. It was adorable.

Finally, and certainly not least. Ayla can now also pick out a picture in a book and say what it is. Particularly turtles. And dogs. Even if a new ad comes on TV with something Ayla knows how to say, she says it. Ayla’s vocabularly and comprehension is growing every minute and its completely amazing.

She’s such a clever sausage.

“Ya ya ya”

20140804-090451-32691220.jpg

Sunday, 3 August 2014: One Year, One Hundred and Twenty Five Days Old.

Ayla’s learned to cover her ears and shout!

It’s hilarious. Ayla will suddenly slam both hands against each side of her head, cover her ears and yell “ya ya ya” before cracking up into a giggle.

I have no idea where she learned it, maybe from wearing ear muffs while we using power tools on our renovations, but this morning Ayla did it out of the blue.

Ayla’s had a bit of an ear thing going for a while now.

A few months ago I noticed her pinching the tops of her ears with her fingers so I went in to give them a rub for her.

Just like The Dog does, Ayla’s head melted into my hand, her eyes rolled back in her head and she let out a soft groan.

Ever since then I’ve notice Ayla pinch at her ears when she’s tired, upset or a bit out of sorts, and if she’s in need of a little settling I’ll rub her ears for her.

But the comfort Ayla gets from that was nothing like the laughs she got from hearing her voice change when she covered her ears the morning, then again tonight at tea.

Oops

Friday, 30 April 2014: One Year and Sixty One Days Old.

Ayla learned how to say “oops” today… “Oops” and “banana.

While Ayla understands the meaning of “oops” and uses it when necessary, because it also doubles as a very fun word to say she’s sound like a broken record.

“Oops” is ringing in my ears at the moment but I love it; Ayla is so proud of her new word and it gets such a great reaction from Hubby and I that I totally understand its overuse.

What cracked me up the most today though was when Ayla purposefully dropped her cup just so she could say “oops”, shrug and show the palms of her hands.

Gosh she’s the cutest kid ever! Lol.

New words

Monday, 26 May 2014: One Year and Eight Weeks Old.

Ayla’s learned heaps of new words lately!

She says “bottle” and “water” and of course “water bottle”.

Ayla also says “biscuit” and “chippie” and “shhh”.

These words of course go with yum, mum, dad, dog, cat cat, grandma, grandad and bubba.

I think I even heard Ayla say “Ayla” today, but there’s countless words like that every day!

Ayla’s still not at the stage of saying a words when I ask her to, but she’s definitely building a good vocabulary!

Yum!

20140311-103306.jpg

Monday, 10 March 2014: Forty Nine Weeks Old.

Ayla says “yum!”

For the past few days I’ve suspected that’s what she’s been saying (Ayla’s “yum” sounds very similar to her “mum”) but now I’m sure of it.

Ayla’s been saying “yum” whenever she eats something she likes, such as grapes, biscuits, choc chip pancakes, yoghurt and kiwi fruit.

Ayla was munching away on a yoghurt sucker thing this morning when I heard her say “yum”; the word was so distinct that it made me think there was a big kid in the room!

That’s been happening a lot lately. I’ll be busy doing something and then I’ll hear Ayla say something so clearly it shocks me and for a second I find myself thinking “who said that?”

Like a couple of days ago when I was changing Ayla’s nappy and I asked her if she was a good girl. Ayla clearly, distinctly and without question replied “good girl”…. I nearly fell off my branch.

Ayla has also said “hello” a few times, and she’s started saying what I think is “wow” sometimes.

As for “Cat Cat” and “dog” I’m pretty certain Ayla’s saying those words too. Well, “Cat Cat” sounds more like a high-pitched bird squeal (“Kae-Kae”) but she definitely applies it at the right moments so I’ll give it to her 😉

PS – if you haven’t already, please vote Ayla as the cutest baby in Australia and help her win a People’s Choice Award in the Bonds Australia Baby Photo Comp…. Thanks in advance! Click here to vote

Definite and deliberate

20140210-213626.jpg

Sunday, 9 February 2014: Three Hundred and Thirteen Days Old.

Ayla is getting much better at communicating.

Her garbled noises are now definite and deliberate, and I’m starting to see a clear pattern in what her different sounds mean.

Ayla’s cutest noise is her happy shriek, which sounds kind of like an “eeee!” that she lets it slip when she’s super excited and happy. Like the day she chased the cat around in her walker, or when I creep up to her with a favourite toy.

Ayla’s saddest noise is her whinging, which sounds mostly like “mumumumum” that she repeats over and over when she’s tired and wants a cuddle. Don’t get me wrong, I love being so in demand and I love that Ayla can call out to me but it definitely breaks my heart.

Ayla’s funniest noise is her “I’m stuck” noise, which sounds mostly like a “ah-ah-ah” or a machine gun in slow motion. Ayla’s been practising this noise a lot lately and I keep finding her in strange places.

Ayla’s scariest noise is her yell, which sounds mostly like a “raaaaaa!” and goes up in pitch the longer and louder she gets. It’s scary because I get forward-flashes to the so-called “Terrible Two’s” and it makes me shudder.

And then there’s Ayla’s giggle, which sounds to me like a “ha-haha-ha” and reminds me of a little old man’s chuckle. Although Ayla smiles a lot her laugh seems reserved for tickle fights and pretend acrobatics which makes it an extra special event when she does.

Lastly, and most fortunately, Ayla rarely cries. Her tears come only if she’s hurt, or beside herself with tiredness… but who could blame her for that? I’ve been known to cry for much less and I thank my stars every day for giving me a strong, calm and happy baby Ayla.

Words

20131102-212312.jpg

Saturday, 2 November 2013; Two Hundred and Fifteen Days Old.

The little noises, screeches and sounds Ayla has been making are becoming more and more like words.

Sometimes it’s easy to think Ayla’s even blurted out a full sentence, and I swear I heard her say “I love you” the other day!

And now when she “talks” Ayla stares at me so intently it’s like we’re the only two people left in the world and she’s telling me important details on how we’re going to survive.

Even the neighbours commented about it! They asked if Ayla was talking yet because they thought they heard her calling out “Dad! Dad!” the other day… Which they probably did.

While Dad-dad and Mum-mum are still Ayla’s most preferred words, she’s been throwing in blub’s, bler’s and rar’s whenever she can.

What’s so amazing to me is that Ayla seems to know exactly what she’s saying.

To us it sounds like baby talk, but when I play back a video of Ayla talking and let her watch it, she gets so excited and proud of her efforts you’d think she’d just given a valedictory speech.

“Mum mum”

20130917-203324.jpg

Tuesday, 17 September 2013: One Hundred and Sixty Nine Days Old.

Ayla’s been practicing her sounds for a while now, but today she actually saying “mum mum”!

I’m convinced its no coincidence…

Ayla only ever calls out “mum mum” when I’m not with her, and she’s never said it when she’s in my arm or by my side..

Can it be?!
Is my baby girl starting to talk? Surely babies walk before they talk!?

But maybe “mum mum” and “dad dad” come long before the other words in a babies vocabulary.

After all Hubby and I provide everything Ayla needs, so it makes sense that we’d be the only words she says for a while yet.

So I wonder… what will Ayla’s first word be?

I’m putting my money on “cat cat”, and Hubby’s tipping “fish”. What do you think? What was your babies first word?

Whatever it is, it’ll still be a while before Ayla’s telling people she wants to be an “archaeological palaeontologist” when she grows up (I didn’t say it ’til I was nearly 3 ;-))
